UV Safety Awareness Month
🌿 “The Lord will keep you from all harm…” — Psalm 121:7
July brings long days, bright sun, and outdoor activities — but it also brings the highest UV exposure of the year. This month, we’re focusing on protecting our skin, preventing sun damage, and keeping our families safe during summer.
🟦 WEEK 2 — ☀️ Sunscreen Safety: What’s Best for Kids & Adults?
Safe Ingredients to Look For
Dermatologists consistently recommend these safe, effective ingredients for both children and adults:
Mineral (Physical) Sunscreens — Best for Sensitive Skin & Kids
These sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays.
- Zinc Oxide
- Titanium Dioxide
Why they’re great:
- Gentle on sensitive skin
- Safe for babies and children
- Less likely to cause irritation
- Broad-spectrum protection
- Immediately effective (no wait time)
These are often labeled “mineral,” “physical,” or “non-nano.”
**Bemotrizinol has been widely used in European and Asian sunscreens for decades. But it has taken 20 years for the FDA to approve its use in this country. Blocks both UVA and UVB. Look out for sunscreen with this ingredient. Available soon in the US.
Ingredients to Avoid or Use With Caution
These are common in chemical sunscreens but can irritate sensitive skin or cause allergic reactions in some people.
Avoid for Kids / Sensitive Skin
- Oxybenzone — linked to higher irritation and environmental concerns
- Octinoxate — can irritate skin and eyes
- PABA — outdated ingredient, highly irritating
- Retinyl Palmitate — may increase sensitivity in sunlight
Use With Caution
- Avobenzone
- Homosalate
- Octocrylene
These are not “bad,” but mineral sunscreens are generally safer for children and sensitive skin.
Is Higher SPF Better? Yes — But With Limits
Here’s the simple truth:
SPF 30
Blocks about 97% of UVB rays (adequate for daily use)
SPF 50
Blocks about 98% (better for outdoor activities)
SPF 70–100
Blocks 99%+, but not dramatically more than SPF 50. The real benefit is longer protection, especially if you forget to reapply.
Important Note:
Higher SPF does not mean you can stay in the sun longer without reapplying. All sunscreens should be reapplied every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating.
Best Guidance for Families in July
- Choose SPF 30–50 for daily use
- Choose SPF 50+ for pool days, beach days, and long outdoor events
- Use mineral sunscreen for babies, kids, and sensitive skin
- Reapply every 2 hours
- Don’t forget ears, neck, shoulders, and tops of feet
May your Shabbat be
filled with Shalom!
