UV Safety Awareness Month
πΏ βThe Lord will keep you from all harmβ¦β β Psalm 121:7
July brings long days, bright sun, and outdoor activities β but it also brings the highest UV exposure of the year. This month, weβre focusing on protecting our skin, preventing sun damage, and keeping our families safe during summer.
π¦ WEEK 3 β Clothing, Shade & Outdoor Safety
βHe will be your shade at your right hand.β β Psalm 121:5
Sunscreen is important, but it is only one part of protecting our skin. This week, we focus on practical ways to stay safe outdoors using clothing, shade, and simple habits that help families enjoy summer without unnecessary sun damage.
Clothing That Protects
The right clothing can block up to 98% of UV rays.
Choose UPF Clothing When Possible
UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) clothing is designed to protect skin from UV exposure.
- UPF 30β50+ offers excellent protection
- Great for pool days, beach trips, and outdoor sports
- Lightweight and breathable options are available for kids and adults
Everyday Clothing Tips
Even without UPF labels, certain fabrics protect better:
- Tightly woven fabrics
- Darker colors
- Long sleeves and long pants when practical
- Rash guards for children in the pool
Hats & Sunglasses
Wide-Brim Hats
Protect the face, ears, scalp, and neck β areas most prone to sun damage.
UV-Blocking Sunglasses
Look for labels that say:
- 100% UV protection
- UV400 (blocks UVA and UVB rays)
Protecting the eyes reduces risk of cataracts and sun-related eye damage.
Shade Strategies
Shade is one of the simplest ways to reduce UV exposure.
- Seek shade between 10 AM and 4 PM
- Use umbrellas, canopies, or pop-up tents at the pool or park
- Remember: Shade does not replace sunscreen
- UV rays reflect off water, sand, and concrete
Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays still reach the skin.
Outdoor Safety for Families
- Keep babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight
- Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours
- Encourage kids to wear hats and rash guards
- Stay hydrated β heat and sun often go hand in hand
- Plan outdoor activities earlier or later in the day
Small habits make a big difference in long-term skin health.
A Message for Our Church Family
God provides the sun for warmth and joy, but He also calls us to wisdom. As we enjoy summer gatherings, vacations, and pool days, letβs protect our skin and teach our children healthy habits that last a lifetime.
May your Shabbat be
filled with Shalom!
