Healthy Aging Month

🌿 Week — “Staying Strong as We Age: Protecting Muscle, Mobility & Independence”

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” — Isaiah 40:29

As we close Healthy Aging Month, we highlight one of the most important — yet rarely discussed — aspects of aging: muscle health. Many people think aging is only about bones, joints, or memory, but muscle strength is one of the strongest predictors of independence, balance, and long-term wellness.

The quiet loss of muscle, called sarcopenia, begins around age 30 and accelerates after age 60. But here’s the good news: Muscle loss is reversible at any age — even in your 70s, 80s, and 90s.

This Sabbath, we encourage every member to take one small step toward staying strong.

Three Simple Ways to Build Strength This Week

1. Practice Sit-to-Stand (10–15 reps)

This single movement strengthens legs, hips, and balance. Do it from a sturdy chair, slowly and with control.

2. Add Protein to Every Meal

Older adults need 20–30 grams of protein per meal to maintain muscle. Easy options: Greek yogurt, eggs, beans, lentils, tofu, chicken, fish.

3. Walk With Purpose

Walking is wonderful for heart health — but walking with intention (longer strides, gentle hills, carrying light groceries) helps activate more muscle groups.

Small habits create big changes.

🌿 Why This Matters

Strong muscles support:

  • balance
  • mobility
  • blood sugar control
  • bone strength
  • confidence
  • independence

Strength is not just physical — it is a gift that allows us to serve, move, worship, and live fully.

💛 A Message for Our Church Family

As we honor Healthy Aging Month, let us remember that God calls us to care for the bodies He lovingly designed. Strengthening our muscles is a simple, powerful way to protect our independence and continue living with purpose. May we encourage one another to stay active, stay nourished, and stay strong.
