Breast Health: What Every Woman Should Know

“She is clothed with strength and dignity.”

PROVERBS 31:25

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a time to support the women in our church family and encourage proactive, preventive care. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, but early detection dramatically improves outcomes.

🌸 1. Know Your Normal

Every woman’s breasts are different. The most important thing is to know what is normal for you. Watch for:

  • New lumps
  • Changes in size or shape
  • Skin dimpling
  • Nipple discharge
  • Persistent pain

Most changes are not cancer — but they should always be checked.

🌸 2. Do a Monthly Self-Exam

A self-exam takes three minutes, in the shower or lying down. Use the pads of your fingers, move in circular motions, cover the entire breast and armpit, and check for changes in skin or texture. Consistency matters more than perfection.

🌸 3. Schedule Your Mammogram

Women ages 40 and older should have a mammogram every year, unless their provider recommends otherwise. Mammograms can detect cancer years before symptoms appear. If you have been delaying your screening, let this be your reminder.

🌸 4. Support the Women Around You

Breast cancer affects mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, caregivers, and survivors. A simple word of encouragement can help someone take the next step toward protecting their health.

💛 A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHURCH FAMILY

God calls us to care for our bodies with wisdom and love. By encouraging early detection and supporting one another, we honor the women in our community and strengthen our families. Let us walk alongside each other with compassion, courage, and hope.
